| | haha. i was just thinking how pathetic it was that i still update my xanga... despite being in yr 12 etc. but i've had it since year 8! i can't just get rid of it lol! and it's kinda nice being able to read back over the posts at the end of each year and see everything that happened and how you changed. yehhh anyway. today... for my own benefit... i'm just going to go through all my possible career choices. cos today i realised that i SHOULD decide on one thing... and stick to it... so that i have something to aim for. okay well... i'll divide it up. Pros & Cons- What I (might) Want to Do One Day: Physicist- as nerdy as it sounds... this one has to come first. + Pros: - something i'd enjoy and never get sick of - interested in it - fairly skilled in it - good opportunities to work overseas - definitely one of the subjects i plan to study in uni + Cons: - it's hard for female physicists to get far... a bit of a 'boys club' exists. only 2 women have ever got the Nobel Prize for Physics. - there are barely any opportunities for physicists in Australia. i'd almost certainly have to move overseas, most likely to Europe... i don't like Europe!!! - unless you are well-respected and established (which usually means you're old and have written a few books), you probably won't earn much at all. - parents are strongly against doing just Advanced Science in uni. Dentist/Orthodontist- the current plan/path i'm following. + Pros: - i can do Advanced Science before i do Dentistry (Dent is postgrad at Sydney Uni)... which i would love to do. - very likely to get the required UAI... and i won't need my UMAT score at all - very well paid - interesting - work flexible hours and be your own boss - parents strooongly support it + Cons: - an undergrad degree such as Advanced Science takes 3 years to complete... then Dentistry is another 7 years... and to specialise in Orthodontics is another 5 (?) years... - i'd have to get used to sticking my hands in peoples' mouths - not much opportunity to change careers or to work overseas Artist/designer/architect- what i'd love to do if money wasn't an issue. + Pros: - drawing/painting/designing is one of the only things i can do for several hours without a break. - love doing creative stuff - apparently talented... this is according to other people. personally i think i suck at painting in particular. - be your own boss + Cons: - money! i have to be realistic... of course you have to do something you enjoy, but if it's going to give me financial difficulty, i'd rather just avoid it. - unless i'm really good at it, i probably won't be successful - parents will probably disown me Singer/Songwriter- best career imaginable... just... highly unlikely. + Pros: - may as well be blunt: i can sing well and i can write good songs - i could do it all day and night without stopping or ever getting sick of it - opportunities to tour - opportunities to live overseas - huge money if i'm successful + Cons: - i'm somewhat fugly... whether their music is good or not, people frequently judge female singers by their appearance - high chance of failure... risky industry - an entire career based upon what other people think of you/want you to do/know about you kind of lacks privacy and is a bit risky - parents will definitely disown me Violinist- my absolutely last option... if i sucked at everything else and was unemployed and starving. + Pros: - i wouldn't starve - qualified to teach - would be able to get into the Conservatorium or a prominent orchestra + Cons: - i hate playing violin - i would almost rather starve than become a violinist - most boring job - i hate kids, let alone teaching them... could never be a teacher - parents will probably disown me yes... maybe i'll look back at this list a bit later down the track. but that's everything i can think of for now. so far... the dentist/ortho option seems the way to go. but who knows? xo Flic |
